This is Emily. Test.
Our group believes that climate change is the most important issue at hand in our world. We believe this because climate change effects many aspects of our world (water, food, disease, natural disasters) climate change is being addressed worldwide by things like the Kyoto protocol although the goals have not been met by most countries, and people seem more concerned about making money than protecting our world.
What do you beleive is the next in line power source? What can do the same as gas? We can have electric hybrids but is electric better than fossil fuels?
Electric has many benefits. First off it creates many jobs for educated people such as electrians, engineers, and technologists along with mathematcians.
How do you suppose we help fix climate change for the world? If climate change is linked to each of our natural disasters, then what if by fixing each problem one by one that we see that climate change isn't the big problem?
Can electricity create more jobs than the oil field?
Well now that NDP is in office hte oil field could start to lose buissness
Well Obama has a plan that he will be reducing emissions from coal plants by becoming more strict with regulations, currently coal plants are the highest sources of GHG emissions. Along with this plan Canada had joined on, of course by fixing problems one by one is the only way to attempt to fix climate change, and it will not happen over night so other problems might be found out of this process, but it will be clear that without fixing climate change there will be serious problems arising through the world.
We can't fix world problems and hope it helps fix climate change. We can't try to preserve our water in a better way hoping that will help stop our planet from heating and ozone from being destroyed. If we fixed a global issue like poverty we could make global warming even worse, more money means more people buying cars and other services that produce more GHG destroying our planet further
manufacturing, project development, construction and turbine installation, operations and maintenance, transportation and logistics, and financial, legal, and consulting services, these are just some of the jobs created by renewable energy sources, besides, in the transition to more renewable energy there will still be jobs in the oilfield, you can't just jump over to another source for energy, so there will be jobs created in the new field, and there will still be jobs left in the old field.
Access to water is an important issue the world is going through as time goes on we lose water by the minute. The more developed countries are already making new inventions and giving foreign aid to the people of less developed countries who have more troubles getting their water. I think that our worlds more powerful countries should give support to the people that are less fortunate in developing countries. They don't need to give their own clean water to these countries but give ideas, money or inventions to help them purify their own exhausting water sources.
Water is important for living. People needs it for surviving. Canada has much of the worlds most cleanest water, more than they need. Is it not fear that they are sharing? When you guys says give "ideas" to making water - how is that possible?
Our plans and ideas we are suggesting that we help build a plan for other country's in the future.
Though Canada does have an abundant supply of water resources, we cannot afford to spend money on water transportation more so than on keeping our environment suitable for living, especially with Canada's debt. We need to invest in a safe environment before sending water to other nations.
Is it really possible to run out of water? Its impossible to create or remove mass from the universe. We will never "run out" of water, it will just change how we obtain it
How can you get fresh water without destroying the environment
Water that is part of livable conditions
Destroying the environment is an issue but that is why we have to cooperate with other countries to develop safe practice of obtaining and conserving fresh water
Just letting everyone know I am starting production of this years toys, so whoever plans on gettig a gift please send out a letter soon. Thanks
What new inventions do you supposed we should make to help poor countries obtain water? We can't make water so are you suggesting that countries like Canada with a larger water supply should give up our water? Which in the future would make Canada in a worse place for water supply to?
We think that absolute poverty is the biggest global issue because it affects billions of people all around the world. Poverty involves many other global issues such as access to water, spread of diseases, hunger, natural disasters and human rights. There are international organizations such as the UN who send foreign aid to those in need. There are also national organizations such as Canadian Red Cross who sends people to countries in need to vaccinate those against diseases. We can help by donating goods, food and money to charities that help. We should stop our own selfishness and help those who are starving to death and living on less than a dollar per day.
Should the goverment work for poverty to? Climate change is also a reason for less waterin our planet. Should the ones who live in poverty in Canada also give a dollar a day for helping other in poverty?
Absolutely the government should work towards poverty too. Countries in need should put their money towards their citizens dying in poverty rather than sending money to things such as the military. If Canadians are able to, they certainly should help those in need in other countries.
Who knows if foreign aid actually helps? Has it really done more good than bad? If we don't have an suitable environment to live in, does poverty really matter? Everyone will be suffering! Look at Australia! There isn't actually vary many people there living in poverty but, they have produced so much pollution they have a giant hole in their ozone right above them. Their cancer rates are now through the roof and the water is rising above levels thy can handle. Climate change effects everything. Why don't we try to save the world so we can save the people who live on it.
How is it possible to "save" the world if people does not teamworl togheter - Nation States need to work toghether for changing the climate. The only way to do that is Foregin Aid..people will always dissagree, but the only way for trying to get a solution is talking over national borders - internationalism and foregin aid...
poverty is causing people to die every 4 seconds. Climate change Causes problems, but it doesn't cause starving children to die every day, just because there isn't very many limited people in Australia, doesn't mean it's not affecting everyone else in other countries.
We aren't saying that foriegn aid isn't good. We are looking for proof that it is! If we work together to save the world from climate change, great! But we need to save the world from climate change before we can focus on any other problem. Climate change works against all other issues in the world. By ignoring climate change and going to try to fix the other problems, the ozone will be completely depleted and salt water in the ocean will rise and then evaporate. We need to focus on climate change because it amplifies all other issues.
Climate change is the long term problem. If we focus on immediate problems only it only creates more problems in the future. Climate change can kill billions of people in the future with unstable weather, flooding and drought
With poverty/foreign aid, we basically look for other in need countries to benefit our own in some way. We say we will help, but we have our terms to go along with it. How do you suppose that we change these terms? Should we have a different approach instead of foreign aid? Do you really think foreign aid benefits the other in need countries more than our own?
Global warming causes crops to burn down and it also makes the soil too dry to use. Without the crops, farmers would lose their jobs and their ability to support themselves and their families. Also, people who defend on crops as their food would starve if global warming continues to destroy them. So why shouldn't we work on global warming first?
Yes - you have a good point, but you still say that foregin aid is not a priority - but how are you gonna solve your problems if countries doesn't work togheter? Countries which are working togheter = foregin aid. You cannot save any of the issues listed up without foregin aid.
We believe climate change is the biggest global issue because if we do not work to save our planet then other global issues will not matter because we as humans will not have a planet to live on in order to have other global issues like poverty, disease and water. Climate change does not only effect us by our glaciers melting but the ozone is being depleted and more UV rays get into our atmosphere harming everything and everyone. Also, if we don't take the money to try to help the world and save it now, we will have to spend so much more later. Because climate change affects us globally, if we do not do something now to change it, all the other issues will become worse in a direct connection with climate change.
Is there proof for all your claims. As thesun ages it is predicted that the sun will warm up by an average of 6 percent.
The sun may be warming up as is ages but we do not need to help the Suns UV Rays hurt the people on earth by destroying our ozone layer and having more UV Rays hit the earths surface than what should be causing more issues like cancer
The holes in the ozone layer could be caused by gamma ray radiation from space
In your presentation the group was making many accusitions About the government. Where did you get info to accuse the government Of spending their funds?
From government websites like the government of Canada's website. And big oilfield company websites, we put the links to the websites in our presentation
We believe that the spread of disease is the most important global issue because of its universal vulnerability. With all the issues of today, we feel that if we are not effected directly then we cannot relate to the amount of distress being placed upon people already effected by the spread of disease. The reason behind why the spread of disease should be at the top of the list is because everyone is suseptible, no matter ethnicity.
Should we start burning bodies in order to stop the spread?
If we are to stop the spread of disease would we have to stop trade in order to contain the disease. If so this could cripple the world economy, what are we to do then?
When modern medicine is becoming more and more advanced, we are able to combat significant diseases effectively such as small pox and polio. Is it really the largest problem if we have been able to effectively fight it?
Medicine can advance all it wants.
But there will always be limits to our ability to cure diseases.
If a deadly disease like Ebola were to appear in mass there would only be so much that we can do with modern medicine, or what if a disease that we don't have a cure for evolves into something that spreads like wildfire what can modern medicine do then
The earth is very overpopulated. The spread of our population will in time mean running out of resources for everyone, and increasing of using those resources thus stirring climate change to a negative state. We should let lives run their course naturally. Survival of the fittest.
As a modern society we have strived to get rid of "survival of the fittest" and worked to make sure everybody has an equal opportunity to strive in life. Is it really fair to turn our backs on people that need our help?
I think spread of disease is not the most important. Climate change and poverty lead to unsafe and unsanitary living conditions for people which both contribute immensely to the spread of disease. Therefore if we fix those issues disease spread will go down.
Burning bodies would not fully eliminate the spread as disease is not only spread by the dead, but through living hosts as well such as animals or individuals.
victims of ebola had traditional burials. If the deceased were handled by hand the chance of spread is greater. Wearing hazmat suits and no skin contact would greatly reduce the chance of spreading.
Is ther not already technology available that Can provide fresh water through the decontamination of it?
Example: sling shot, a project funded by coca cola, that is a water distillation system that cleans 1000 gallons of water a day, from any source, for 0.02 cents a litre, and there are 300 of them being deployed this year in developing countries
It is proven that there are natural remedies that are found in the nature that could cure diseases. If we let global warming destroy our planet, where else could we get natural remedies or how else could we find other possible treatment if the planet is gone?
Climate change affects all of these other issues, which is why we need to take action, weather and climate play a huge role on the health of people. Temperatures will likely lead to hotter days which can cause frequent heat wave, causing heat related illnesses and deaths. There for of we dont pay attention to our climate change diaeases wouldnt have such a high rate.
Are there really proven natural cures for such serious infectious diseases as Ebola? Is it realistic to ignore the involvement of the medical community and just use natural remedies?
There isn't any proven natural remedy found yet for Ebola but there are some food that help with some diseases such as cancer. Here's a site that could prove my idea: http://www.m.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/features/seven-easy-to-find-foods-that-may-help-fight-cancer?page=5
http://www.globalissues.org/issue/178/climate-change-and-global-warming this article proposes that climate change is in fact one of the most threatening issues to our planet. Though actions are being taken, it isn't without the help of everyone collectively that we can solve the issue.
People seem to have the delusion that we cannot have both a stable enviorment or a steady economy. With the response to climate change comes economic stablility. As we can see with our economy now having a whole market based on one resource may be an unwise decision. With new renewable resources and fuels comes an economy that doesn't have all of it's eggs in one basket.
http://water.org/water-crisis/water-facts/water/ these are some facts on how the shortage of clean water is going to effect people in our world
Another big issue is big corporations, as all other issues are related to this being in control. Climate change results in the increasing amount of CO2 and other GHG's. Poverty results in the decreasing amount of money invested in foreign aid and poor economic growth of third world countries, while increasing the amount of wealth being invested into big corporations. As well as the limited amount of money invested in water transportation. Diseases cannot be cured without the investment of scientific research and vaccines. Much of our money and wealth should not be spent on big corporations that destroy our planet, it should be invested in solving these problems that man created in the first place.
I agree with Jakob. The world needs to stop relying on things like oil and gas to create economy, this is destroying our planet and furthering global warming to continue. We need to create a stable planet in which we can stabilize our economy on other alternative resources which do not harm our planet, if we harm the planet we are harming ourselves
I don't like everyone's humerous comments I take this very seriously
We think Climate Change is the most important because it is mainly our fault that the world temperature is rising up which is affecting all aspects of life all over the world with natural disaster becoming more frequent and severe which is destroying peoples traditional way of life and displaces them.We have made the Kyoto Protocol to lessen the GHG emmision but was a failure because countries were too focused with their economy. The Copenhagen Accord was also made to continue the Kyoto Protocol to keep the world temperature below 2 degree and find new sources. We think that we should find new sources instead of fossil fuels ands and we should start recycling and be more conciouos of how we affect the environment.
People who lives in poverty around the world would not be able to do these objectives themselves because they were not educated with what is happening in the world. Recycling is one thing that poor people are not good at. People who lives in the streets are the one's who are throwing garbage around and plastic anywhere.

I think many people would agree that "poor people" would be better at recycling/reusing materials. They don't have as much stuff to work with, so they tend to use what they have, over and over until they can't use it for anything else. If they had a bottle of water for example, they would "recycle" it by reusing it and filling it up again and again, because they don't have any more bottles to use.
We already failed the Kyoto protocol, Canada has said they can not reach the 15% mark of dropping greenhouse gases, which in the end causes them to lose 51 billion dollars. So if many countries including us, failed one emmission, then what makes you think we can succeed on the other one? Not every country will recycle and not every countries will watch out for its environment because the government has a lot more world problems to deal with like human rights and access to water.
Just because something doesn't work the first time, what gives us the reason to give up? Why would you give up on something with good intentions, just cause it failed once? Try again, make it work, it's not difficult to find a different solution to whatever the problem that we are facing is, especially if the end solution will definitely be a good step forward
I agree that the first try to lessen GHG emission was a failure and the Copenhagen Accord may not be successful either but the the maybe if we keep on trying and we finally see how much we are destroying our environment then maybe more and more people will try to male a difference.
Human Rights is an extreme issue, and it is something our world has struggled to find equality in all people when it is the most basic of all human needs. Developed countries such as Canada have incredible systems put in place to ensure our complete well being while most other nations will never know the basic rights of human lives, we are take advantage of this privilege being a Canadian when it should be treated as a gift.
How do we promote human rights to those without insulting beliefs/ religion/ values, etc?
How do you propose achieving human rights and equal rights around the world? There will always be racism, discrimination, conflicting religions, dictators, etc. The sooner people can accept that the sooner the allusion of human rights for all goes away.
Ever since 1948, human rights was eatablished. Since then, we as a world and nations have not been able to get along with each other till today. We still can not help each other till today, as well as many of the people's nations are causing wars and riots in there own country since they know they can have human rights and get help. They are rioting because they like the power and want more human rights but do you think human rights create wars instead of helping? For thousands of years our people have lived without human rights till 1948. So what makes you think we need it?
if people can not begin to accept others races, religions, ethnicities, etc. how are we expected to treat everyone with equality when people are still againt races and religions that are different from their own? We thought racism was abolished but today we still have even cops killing people of a different race than their own which is not promoting equality. How do we take the first step to instilling these human rights if the people higher up in society than us are condeming human rights?
We think absolute poverty is the most important because it links to a lot of other major global issues like disease, lack of water, human rights, and climate change. People have started donating money, food, and essentials for living to these poverted people. People also helped them build shelter and give them education. We should keep doing what we're doing to help them and donate some more if we can.
You said poverty is linked to all the other issues, so are you saying that without the other issues there would be no poverty?
If yes, then technically, aren't you also saying that the other issues are more important?
We are saying that Poverty is the core to the other major Global issues. If poverty is dealt with then other issues would be resolved as well.
If we were to help with poverty, what is the first step that we can take to help make a change?
How does poverty affect lack of water or climate change? It is not an essential for living and being poor doesn't effect the enviroment.
Even poor people need water. They also affect climate change because they're not aware of what is happening around the world. Throwing garbage on seawaters affects the environment with acid rain. Also if we were to help with climate change people who lives in poverty must be taught how to recycle.
Why should we (Canada) help people in poverty on the other side of the world? What do we gain from doing so? No country has ever successfully gone from being poor to developed off heavy foreign aid, it would be better to let them fend for themselves and keep our resources to help the less fortunate in our own streets.
helping other countries pull through poverty would be beneficial. put yourself in the position of someone facing those hardships. would you not want help? we should help other countries as much as we can instead of leaving them to suffer. I don't see how leaving them to fend for themselves is a positive solution. millions of people in this world are living in poverty and working together to help abolish it may work better than you think.
You wouldn't want help if you were in their situation? K
Corruption is a huge cause of poverty. I guess corrupt people/government should stop what they are doing, so the money and donation for the people who are in need can get what they need.
We still believe that climate change is the most important, because it addresses most of the problems we face in the world today. Climate change sparked the Kyoto Protocol, and Copenhagen15. Climate change doesn't only affect the less fortunate countries in the world, but it can also affect the rich. It affects the world socially and economically, as well as the military. And ACCESS TO WATER. There is not one thing in the world that isn't affected by climate change. :)
There is no climate without water!
Melting water issues have to do with the changing climate, meaning it should be the first addressed issue
so if we had no water at all, there would be no heat from the sun? there would be no landslides? there would be no holes in the ozone layer? I'm not understanding what you are trying to argue about
I agree that this issue affects everyone, but what if everyone doesn't agree on a decision or not everyone contributes.
I absolutely agree that Climate Change is a extreme global issue that affects everyone and all of these positions. We must start thinking about these not only individually and which ones we can fix first but how they all connect to one another as all of these issues cannot be solved without looking at how each will affect one another in beneficial ways!
The climate has always changed and the climate will continue to change. That's why we are not still in an ice age. We could just be in a natural warming cycle.
We believe the most important global issue is access to water because water is a neccissary resource to sustain life, agriculture and industry on earth. The world today is burning through more water than the world can sustain leading to millions of fatalities. If we continue on this path the world will decline and we will be left with very little water there for we believe it is not worth providing water to foregin countries as unless they can get their own sustainable water source they are bringihg us down with them.
So this pretty much states that underdeveloped countries and some other developing countries should just stop trying to get access to water and just live to die?
As bad as it may seem that is the reality we live in. It is not economically sustainable to help everyone in the world and were hastening our own demise by giving all our water away.
It is important that everyone has access to water but is it not more important to find ways in which we can have a sustainable amount of water all of over the world while thinking about the present and the future.
Finding ways to help sustain global water is a great alternative to giving charity around the world. But until we have that alternative it is not worth providing aid in the long run.
At the beginning of the presentation you explained that water is more expensive then gas. Does that affect the economy? and how does that affect the people in first world countries? For example many schools have help countries built wells isnt that an example for helping other gain their sustainability?
We were not referring to individual acts, were referring to governments and nations as a whole. In the short run it seems nice to help others but in the long run were only hurting ourselves.
Water is the basic need for us, if the earth no longer has water, people can't survive. Also, people won't have chance to solve another problems .
We think international trade is the most concerning issue because most countries that are providing us with everyday resources are countries that are struggling politically and economically. We are able to get resources that we don't have from international trade and we are able to communicate with other countries through the process.
There are international laws that about how countries trade with each other...however those trade laws only end up affecting the richer countries..what is a system in which all countries can equally benefit from it??
The reality of it is that there probably won't be a system that will benefit everyone. Every country isn't in a good condition economically or even politically to be in the trade group with the richer countries. But there are small benefits to the poorer countries, like in Canada we don't process our resources before we send it to another country so when they process the materials they are able to bump up prices and make money off of us.
While this is an obvious concern, how can it be the largest when so many other major issues are present today. Although International trade - very necessary it won't be something that keeps people alive such as basic needs, and makes the lives of everyone equal. Human Rights is the barest essential today as it provides everything that one human being can live off of and should naturally come, and not be on the table as a question of why it is necessary!
Jo, I completely agree with your argument about the importance of human rights. Since we face climate change as another major issue,
do you believe that we can come together to solve more than just one major world problem?
human rights is a major concern but from the viewpoint of two people it seems to be a lot easier to improve international trade than human rights, we believe that we cannot interfere in countries who do not provide human rights to its citizens. Everyone has their own beliefs and values and even political systems and unfortunately we can't just force our values and rights unto others.
I noticed that in the acess to water presentation there was a quote that talked about how the water belongs to the people; but it is the people that Are destroying the water resources. And if you are not ethically obliged to help other countries or other people around the world gain water then since water shortages are a problem around the world what are you're plans to fix the issue if we aren't not obliged to help others.
I agree with you. It is really ironic that we own the water but We are also the ones destroying it.
So if we are indeed the ones who own the water but yet we are destroying the water supply how do you plan on changing that? What is your next plan of action so that we can decrease the likelihood of this happening again?
Issues like climate change that provide the stepping stones for our worlds future are most important and should be addressed immediately because our entire planet will not have a future without control over the warming climate. It is more important than minor issues like international trade that can be quickly solved
how can we solve problems such as poverty and access to wAter and human rights when we can't save ourselves from actual destruction in the long run because we're not focusing on solving climate change?
At least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 a day. How can these people help with climate change when they can barely live? If we were to help this 80% of people living in this planet, It will be much more easier to help and solve climate change issues.
Solving Poverty will be a part of solving climate change. Those who live in absolute poverty have little education on what would affect the earth negatively. They do things, such as using dynamite to catch fish, in order to survive and be able to get resources they need for their survival. Many companies as well transport hazardous waste materials to under developed nations and these hazardous waste affect not only the environment but the people as well as it introduces diseas to the people in the uderdeveloped nation.
I don't think International trade is the most important issue. The one of the most important reason why the world has so many natural disasters and environmental problems is people focus on countries' economic development too much. If the economy is bad, people still could survive, but if there is not a good environment, we can't live physically
Many people have different opinions on what they believe is the most critical issue today but in the big picture, international trade is essential to our world today. If the climate is bad it also effects the economy, many people rely on their agriculture and sell their goods, it's how they make a living. If we can improve their economy, it can help improve their environment too. Both big issues in our world today.
At least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 a day. More than 80 percent of the world's population lives in countries where income differentials are widening. The majority of people living in this planet are barely surviving. How can they focus on other things if they need help themselves? How can they help other issues without having anything? How can we start change if 80% of humanity needs help?
Before we can tackle on larger issues I believe human
Rights is of
The utmost importance.can I go to the washroom now please blimke?
